The University of Waterloo (UW) Fire Research Group

The UW Fire Research Group aims to

Through partnerships and collaborations, the Fire Research Group will seek out, and capitalize on, new educational and research opportunities available in fire safety and related areas.

    Research

The UW Fire Research Group undertakes research projects which entail the application of basic principles of fire science to develop new understanding of the behaviour of full-scale fires, the flammability and performance of materials and products, fire initiation and spread, methods for fire detection and suppression, and many ancillary issues.

    Resources

Research and educational activities of the Fire Research Group are supported by The UW Fire Research Facility, with its world-class fire research infrastructure worth over $5.6M. The Facility is associated with The Waterloo Region Emergency Services Training and Research Complex (WRESTRC).  This affiliation provides for close collaboration with fire service personnel, a remote and secure location for The Facility, additional infrastructure and support for live fire research activities and classrooms for the Fire Safety graduate program.

Interested in booking the Fire Research Facility? Unsure of whether your project is suitable?

We welcome requests from outside companies or research centers interested in research related to any aspect of fire performance, testing and development. Our large cross-flow test area is also suited to a variety of other wind driven experiments, such as studies of wind turbine performance.
